The Company
We’re partnering with a fast-growing ecommerce business that’s investing heavily in its technology function and embarking on an exciting new chapter within Quality Assurance.
With a well-established development team and a talented QA function focused on manual testing, the business is now looking to introduce automation testing for the first time. This role will play a pivotal part in shaping their automation journey from the ground up, making it an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys building, influencing and leaving a lasting impact.
As part of a collaborative technology team, you’ll work closely with Developers, Product Managers and the existing QA team to introduce best practices, build automation frameworks and help embed automation into the software development lifecycle.
This role is hybrid, with two days per week in the Manchester office, so we’re looking to speak with candidates who are within a reasonable commuting distance.
The Role
As the QA Automation Engineer, you’ll lead the implementation of automation testing across the business. From designing and building robust automation frameworks to mentoring the existing QA team, you’ll be instrumental in transforming the company’s testing capabilities.

What You’ll Be Doing
- Designing, developing and maintaining automation frameworks from the ground up
- Building robust UI and API automated test suites
- Working with Playwright and Cypress to improve test coverage and software quality
- Collaborating closely with Developers, Product Managers and the wider QA team
- Introducing automation best practices across the software development lifecycle
- Supporting CI/CD pipelines to enable automated testing within deployments
- Identifying opportunities to improve testing processes and reduce manual effort
- Executing exploratory and regression testing where required
- Coaching and upskilling the existing manual QA team in automation principles and best practices
- Working closely with stakeholders to ensure quality is considered throughout the development process
- Continuously improving test reliability, maintainability and overall efficiency
What They’re Looking For
Essential Skills
-
At least 3 years of commercial experience in QA Automation
- Strong experience building automation frameworks from scratch
- Commercial experience with Playwright and/or Cypress
- Experience automating both UI and API testing
- Good understanding of software testing methodologies and best practices
- Experience integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to mentor and support others
- Comfortable working in a collaborative Agile environment
- Able to commute to the Manchester office two days per week
Nice to Have
- Knowledge of JavaScript or TypeScript
- Experience within ecommerce or other high-traffic digital platforms
- Exposure to AI-powered testing tools or AI-assisted software development
- Performance or load testing experience
- Experience working with cloud-based environments
- Experience introducing automation into a previously manual testing environment
